Offline for a couple of days because my firewall had a nervous breakdown. I don't know what possessed me to install ZoneAlarm Pro in the first place, but it's been nothing but cranky, and I'm back to the freeware version. Anybody have firewall recommendations, just in case?

I use ISS's Black Ice at home. The applicaiton protection will kill any code you don't specifically authorize to run. You can do simple scans and authorize any current code as good. I haven't had any problems and it tells me everytime someone probes my system, what the probe was, etc. You get free updates for a year, you can repurchase the update option after that. The only pain in the butt is the application protection does not recognize new versions of old code as valid, which means that when windows updates, all that new code is considered unreliable, which requires that you rescan the system. It's a pain, but better safe than sorry is my view. I have completely dropped using a virus scan trusting that Black Ice will stop any rogue code that makes it through, and my own knowledge/intelligence will keep me from installing a virus. So far it has worked well.

I have heard that zone alarm is good though. I just have no experience with it.

Thanks for the rec! I'd heard about Black Ice (and would almost use it just for the name *g*), but I hadn't heard any reports on how it works. Great to know it's there as an alternative.
