I seem to recall that one of his un-produced Star Trek scripts was turned into a Star Trek novel by someone he approved of. I don't quite recall the title.

I think it's "The Joy Machine" and was written by James Gunn based on the Sturgeon material.

That sounds right. I remember reading that story but need a refresher. Must add to the "must reread" pile, which is getting scary because it's nearly as high as the "must read" pile.
