They Haven't Got the Earthsea Thing Down
Dec. 14th, 2004 11:45 pmSo I managed to watch maybe fifteen minutes of the Sci Fi Earthsea thing tonight.
The line where I bailed? Sparrowhawk after voicing some complaint to a young woman pouring water into his bath: "But you've got the massage thing down."
You've got the massage thing down.
Dude.
It's like listening to a Beach Boys setting of E. R. Eddison.
Also:
I'd have to look at a repeat, which I am highly unlikely to bother doing, but did they spell Ursula K. Le Guin's name "Ursula K. le Guin"?

Earthsea, like totally--not!

Date: 2004-12-16 08:53 pm (UTC)I'd seen the piece on Le Guin's Webpage, but not the other article. (Links lifted from Becky's blog entry (http://www.maines.org/2004/12/wizard-of-different-color.html) are to The Agony Column (http://trashotron.com/agony/columns/2004/12-15-04.htm) and Slate (http://www.slate.com/id/2111107/).)
The New York Times quoted a response of hers that I haven't seen in any of the above. I'd really like to re-quote it, but I read it in the paper paper and haven't been able to find it on the Times Website. It was a wonderfully elegant, acerbic, understated, classy condemnation of the subversion of her intent. Some of the recycling didn't get put out; maybe I can dig it out of the pile.
